Port Blair Sightseeing: Every Place Worth Your Time, With Timings and Day Plans
Most Port Blair sightseeing fits into two days. The catch is the timetable. Museums shut on Mondays, Ross Island shuts on Wednesdays, Chatham Saw Mill closes at lunchtime and the Baratang convoy leaves before dawn. Get the order wrong and you spend half a day standing outside locked gates.
This page lists every sight in and around the city, grouped by how you get there, with the hours, closed days and the order we use when we plan trips for our own guests.

City Sights You Can Cover by Car
Everything here is within 20 minutes of Aberdeen Bazaar. With a car you can see four or five of them in a morning, as long as it isn't a Monday.
Monday tip: the Anthropological Museum, Samudrika, the Fisheries Museum, Jolly Buoy and Baratang are all shut on Mondays. If you land on a Monday, do Corbyn's Cove, Ross and North Bay or the Chidiya Tapu sunset that day and save the museums for later.
History · Start Here
Atlanta Point, in town · 1.5 to 2 hours · Evening light and sound show
The British finished this prison in 1906 to lock away freedom fighters, and most of Port Blair's history runs through it. Three of the original seven wings still stand. You can walk the corridors, look into the tiny cells and climb to the central tower for a view over the harbour.
Go in the daytime for the museum, then come back after dark for the light and sound show. Show tickets sell out in peak season, so book them the day you arrive.

Beach · Easy Evening
About 7 km from Aberdeen Bazaar · Free entry · Water sports roughly 9 am to 4:30 pm
The city's own beach, and the easiest thing to do on arrival day. It is a short curve of sand with palms behind it and Snake Island just offshore. The road in passes a line of Japanese bunkers from the Second World War.
Jet ski and speedboat rides run from here. If you only want a swim and a coconut, an hour is plenty.

Museum · Closed Monday
Anthropological Museum
Middle Point, in town · 45 minutes · Closed Mondays and government holidays
A small museum about the islands' tribes: the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese, and the Nicobarese and Shompen further south. The tools, canoes and old photographs explain a lot about why parts of the islands are closed to visitors.
Worth doing before a Baratang trip, since that road runs through the Jarawa reserve.
Museum · Closed Monday
Samudrika Naval Marine Museum
Haddo, in town · 45 minutes to 1 hour · Closed Mondays, shut over lunch
Run by the Indian Navy. Inside you'll find shells, corals, a small aquarium and the skeleton of a blue whale in the garden. Kids tend to like it more than the other museums.
The government Fisheries Museum near Marine Hill has more live fish tanks if you want a second stop. It shuts on Mondays and the second Saturday of the month.
Heritage · Mornings Only
Chatham Saw Mill
Chatham Island, linked by a short bridge · 1 hour · About 8:30 am to 2:30 pm, closed Sundays
Set up in 1883 and still cutting timber, this is one of the oldest sawmills in Asia. You walk past the machines while they work, then into a Forest Museum full of carved padauk and other island woods.
It closes early, so put it in the morning. Most people forget this and arrive at 3 pm.
Harbour and Island Trips by Boat
Boats for Ross Island and North Bay leave from Aberdeen Jetty, next to the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex. Jolly Buoy boats leave from Wandoor, about an hour's drive away. All of these depend on the sea, so a rough morning can cancel a trip.
History · Closed Wednesday
15 to 20 minutes by boat · 1.5 hours on the island · Now called Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep
This tiny island was the British headquarters until an earthquake in 1941 and the Japanese occupation in 1942. Now the church, bakery, officers' club and water tank are slowly being swallowed by fig roots. Spotted deer and peacocks walk around as if they own the place.
Wear proper shoes, because the paths go uphill. The island is closed on Wednesdays.

Coral · Open All Week
Short boat ride from Ross or Aberdeen Jetty · 2 to 2.5 hours · Snorkel, sea walk, glass-bottom boat
The red-and-white lighthouse here is the one printed on the old ₹20 note. The reef off the beach is the easiest place near the city to see coral, and the guides hold non-swimmers by the hand the whole time.
Almost everyone does Ross and North Bay together as one half-day boat trip. Drinking water is sold on the island, but carry some anyway.

History · Harbour Cruise
Viper Island
Harbour cruise from Phoenix Bay jetty · About 2.5 to 3 hours round trip
Before Cellular Jail was built, prisoners were held here. The ruins of the old jail and the gallows still stand on the hilltop. It is quieter than Ross and takes a little imagination, but history buffs like it.
You usually see it on the afternoon harbour cruise rather than as a separate trip.
Full Day · Closed Monday
Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Islands
Boat from Wandoor jetty · Full day · Marine National Park permit needed
These two islands sit inside the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, and the water is the clearest you'll find near Port Blair. Only one of them is usually open at a time so the reef can recover. The glass-bottom boat is good enough that you don't need to swim.
Plastic bottles and bags are not allowed on the islands, so pack food in steel or paper.
Drives Out of Town
These need a car for a half or full day. There is very little transport back in the evening, so don't rely on catching something on the spot.
Sunset · Half Day
Chidiya Tapu
About 25 km south · 45 to 60 minutes by road · Leave the city by 3 pm
The name means "bird island", and early mornings here are loud with birdsong. Most people come in the afternoon instead, for the sunset from Munda Pahar beach at the southern tip of the island.
The Chidiya Tapu Biological Park is on the same road if you have kids with you. The sea along this stretch is not safe for swimming.
Views · Morning
Mount Harriet (Mount Manipur)
Across the harbour · Ferry to Bamboo Flat then a short drive, or the long way round by road · Half day
The second-highest point in the Andamans, renamed Mount Manipur in 2021. A forest road climbs to the top, where the old British summer residence once stood, and the view of North Bay lighthouse from here is the one on the ₹20 note.
It is a few degrees cooler than the city. Go early in the morning for clear views and birds.
Quiet Beach
Wandoor Beach
About 25 km south-west · 1 hour by road · Combine with Jolly Buoy
A long, flat beach with mangroves at one end and dead tree trunks from the 2004 tsunami still standing in the sand. It is very quiet on weekdays.
Since the Jolly Buoy boats leave from the jetty here, most people see Wandoor on the way back from the islands.
Least Crowded
Collinpur Beach
South-west of the city · 45 to 60 minutes by road · Half day
There are no water sports and hardly any stalls at Collinpur, which is the whole point. It is a wide beach with a calm view across the bay and very few people.
Good for a third or fourth day in Port Blair, once the main sights are done.
Full Day · Closed Monday
Baratang Island
About 100 km north · Leave around 3 to 4 am · Back by late afternoon
The longest day trip from Port Blair and, for many of our guests, the most memorable. The road runs through the Jarawa tribal reserve in a timed convoy, then a speedboat takes you through mangrove creeks to the limestone caves. Many trips also stop at the mud volcano.
Stopping, photographing or handing anything to the Jarawa people is illegal, and drivers take this seriously. The caves are closed on Mondays.

Getting Around for Sightseeing
A car with a driver for the day is the simplest way to do it, and it is what we arrange for our guests. Autos and app cabs work for short hops in town, like Cellular Jail to Aberdeen Bazaar, but are hard to find for the drives south or for the return trip from Chidiya Tapu after sunset.
Ross and North Bay boats leave from Aberdeen Jetty. Go early in peak season because the queues get long by 9 am. Jolly Buoy boats leave from Wandoor and need a Marine National Park permit, which we sort out a day ahead.
Port Blair was officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024. You'll see the new name on some signboards and tickets, but drivers, hotels and ferry staff still call it Port Blair. Flights land at Veer Savarkar International Airport, about 15 minutes from most hotels.

Port Blair Sightseeing FAQs
What are the best places to visit in Port Blair?
Cellular Jail, Ross Island and North Bay Island are the three that almost every visitor sees. After those, add the Chidiya Tapu sunset, Corbyn's Cove Beach, the Anthropological Museum and Samudrika Museum. With a spare full day, go to Baratang for the limestone caves or Jolly Buoy for clear water and coral.
How many days do you need for Port Blair sightseeing?
Two full days cover the main sights comfortably: Cellular Jail, Corbyn's Cove, Ross and North Bay, and a couple of museums. Add a third day if you want Baratang or Jolly Buoy, since each of those takes a whole day on its own.
Which Port Blair sights are closed on Monday?
The Anthropological Museum, Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, the Fisheries Museum, Jolly Buoy and Red Skin islands, and the Baratang limestone caves are all closed on Mondays. Ross Island, North Bay and Corbyn's Cove stay open, so plan those for a Monday.
Which day is Ross Island closed?
Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays. North Bay Island stays open all week, so on a Wednesday you can still do the North Bay boat trip on its own.
What are the Cellular Jail timings?
Cellular Jail is usually open from about 9 am to 12:30 pm and again from 1:30 pm to 4:45 pm. The light and sound show runs after dark in the evening. It can shut on some public holidays, so check with us or at the gate the day before.
Can you see Ross Island and North Bay in one trip?
Most people do. A single boat from Aberdeen Jetty usually stops at Ross Island for about an hour and a half, then goes on to North Bay for two hours or so, and you are back in the city by early afternoon.
Is Baratang worth a day trip from Port Blair?
For most of our guests it is one of the most memorable days of the trip. You drive north through the Jarawa reserve in a convoy, then take a speedboat through mangrove creeks to the limestone caves. It is a long day that starts around 3 or 4 am, so skip it if you only have two days in Port Blair.
Do you need a permit for Jolly Buoy Island?
Jolly Buoy and Red Skin are inside the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, so every visitor needs a permit. Numbers are limited each day, which is why we apply a day in advance for our guests. Plastic bottles and bags are not allowed on the island.
What is the best time for Port Blair sightseeing?
October to May is the best time. December to March has the calmest sea, which matters for the boat trips. From late May to September the monsoon can cancel boats and Jolly Buoy closes, though the city sights and museums stay open.
How do you get around Port Blair for sightseeing?
A car with a driver for the day is the easiest option, and it is what we arrange for our guests. Autos and app cabs are fine for short trips in town, but they are hard to find for Chidiya Tapu, Wandoor or the drive back after sunset.
Is Port Blair now called Sri Vijaya Puram?
Port Blair was officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024. Some signboards and tickets use the new name, but locals, drivers and hotels still say Port Blair, and both names point to the same city.
What can you do in Port Blair in the evening?
The light and sound show at Cellular Jail is the main evening plan. Before that, catch the sunset at Chidiya Tapu or Corbyn's Cove, keeping in mind it comes around 5 pm in winter. Aberdeen Bazaar is busy in the evening for shopping and seafood dinners.
Is Port Blair sightseeing suitable for elderly travellers and kids?
Most of it is. The museums, Corbyn's Cove and the Cellular Jail ground floor are easy, and the glass-bottom boat at North Bay suits anyone who doesn't want to swim. Ross Island has uphill paths and Baratang involves a very early start and a walk to the caves, so those take more energy.
